Nascar 3

Fans of Sierra's NASCAR series probably know what to expect from NASCAR 3; sharp graphics, tons of options, and plenty of challenging, realistic gameplay. In addition to the expected stat updates, NASCAR 3 also provides enhanced graphics, a greater number of tracks, support for force feedback, and even more ways to customize the cars. In other words, the game offers almost everything a devoted NASCAR fan would desire.

Realism has always been a priority for the titles, and NASCAR 3 continues to uphold the series' tradition of accuracy. Indeed, some would argue that the NASCAR games are not games at all, but detailed simulations. Unlike many racing games, the cars do exhibit a convincing feeling of weight and speed. Force feedback provides another level of realism for those who are fortunate enough to own such a device.

Also like the older games, NASCAR 3's relatively steep learning curve means the player must practice quite a bit before making any real progress. Gamers will probably hit a limit on how well they perform if they stick with the default car. Players must practice not only controlling the car, but also altering its properties to fit their style. To do so, gamers can customize the cars and tweak their performance by manipulating a large number of variables ranging from weight to grille tape. The modifications do indeed make the handling feel different, and players will eventually discover a favorite setup

The graphics and sounds complement the gameplay by adding their own touches of authenticity to the environment. With a good graphics card, players will see plenty of nice details and special effects, all of which enhance the overall feel of the game. Improved lighting, transparency effects and sharp textures all help to portray the competitive racing atmosphere. Just as with the other NASCAR games, fans will recognize the tracks and cars as replicas of their real-life counterparts. Although a high-quality graphics card certainly provides the best overall experience, software mode is still acceptable.

Sound effects also make their contributions. Screeching tires, plenty of engine noises as well as speech samples help the player make choices while simultaneously aiding the overall game experience.

Despite its overall high quality, NASCAR 3 is not for all gamers, even if the player generally enjoys other styles of racing games. People who are not NASCAR fans may find the idea of repeatedly circling a track somewhat boring. Additionally, the great number of tiny details as well as the high level of challenge will discourage gamers who want a relatively fast-paced, easy-to-play title. However, NASCAR 3 does not attempt to cater to these groups. Instead, its goal is to please those who enjoy the sport, a goal it accomplishes nicely.
