Blood 2: The Nightmare Levels

Oh man. I wasn't expecting this. Monolith's official expansion pack for Blood 2 completely caught me off guard. A universe usually set in a far darker environment was transformed. No longer was it dark and sinister, the game was now twisted and funny. That's right, funny. I couldn't believe it myself until I had about 5 clowns with .45s chasing me through a circus, while they screamed things about my soul burning in hell. Or perhaps it was when I was invading a girls' dorm, which was under attack by several little gremlins.

Probably the first thing that sets the mood for this title is the introduction. We find our poor friend Gideon trapped in the confines of a skull. He informs the player he is not bitter, or at least shouldn't be, and begins to tell the tale of "The Nightmare". The story begins with Caleb and the Chosen telling each other scary stories while they roast weenies and marshmallows. That is just weird compared to how Blood 2 started.

Each tale Caleb and the Chosen tell are accompanied by an offbeat narration, which reveals an embarrassing secret about the teller. I won't spoil it for you, but you should be surprised by a few of the revelations.

Monolith added a couple new baddies to eradicate. Gremlins are just as you would expect them to be, small and annoying. They have this cool little laugh though, which I really enjoyed as I chopped them up with my knife. The Cultists have returned! They are pretty fun to make a mess of, except at one point where you're in a hedge maze. As you make your way deeper it gets to the point were probably every cultist on the level is screaming something. Soon all you can hear are the annoying screams of these jerks, so make sure to take it upon yourself to silence them.

The final boss of this game is pretty large and in charge. Simply called "The Nightmare", it is the one responsible for all the wacky mishaps that the Blood 2 crew has been involved in. It is sort of a dog looking thing, like that dog demon from Ghostbusters, but with a bigger nose. He isn't too difficult to beat, just a lot of side-step involved.

Two new weapons were added to the Team's arsenal. The Combat Shotgun is my favorite weapon setup, next to the Dual Shotgun method. It fires shotgun shells in semi-automatic bursts. The other new weapon of death is The Flayer. It is sort of a whip with a hook stuck on the end. Very fun to use just for its gruesome qualities.

The Nightmare Levels consist of about 6 levels counting the boss stage. This may sound like a real small number compared to those other FPS expansion packs. The original Blood 2 was comprised of several smaller levels, which made up chapters. The Nightmare Levels make up a chapter, but imagine the small levels of Blood 2 multiplied by three. These levels are considerably large, and more than make up for small quantity.

One thing that sort of bugged me about the expansion involved the new enemies. I don't believe they added a weapon effect to the new character models. The clown seems to have the effect of the sphere weapon digging into his skull, but I suspect he was built on the model of those mean people in suits in Blood 2. The Gremlin and Cultist didn't seem to react correctly to that particular weapon. It was only one weapon, so it isn't that big a hoopla.

This is what it's all about. Developers like Monolith seem to be starting to realize that beating a series' atmosphere to death in expansion packs or sequels is one way to kill it. It never hurts to have some fun. Really sick and twisted fun. Hehehe…..
