hen Alexey Pajitnov was creating Tetris, I’m sure he knew he had something big, however, I doubt his wildest dreams could have even compared to the sheer magnitude that it has become, with more spin-offs than Capcom’s Street Fighter 2, and more platform’s covered than any Acclaim title you can think of. While bearing very little resemblance to it’s namesake, Tetrisphere is still very addicting.

The basic premise is this, you’re presented with a sphere, made up multiple layers of different geometrical shapes ( from the original Tetris ), which can be cleared by moving and placing like blocks on top of or beside each other in groups of three or more. Depending on which game mode you’re in, the objectives are different. In Rescue mode, you must clear enough of the surface in order for a trapped robot to escape. In Hide & Seek, you must work your way through a series of different objectives, such as uncovering pictures or clearing space from under an object. Puzzle mode presents you with problems to solve with a limited number of slides and drops, Time Trial and 2 Player options are also available.

You're allowed only three 'bad drops', so check each move carefully before proceeding. However, the clock's always ticking, so be sure not to take too long.

The graphics are very simple, basically everything’s made up of polygons, along with trippy backgrounds, and a techno soundtrack. Actually, it’s not hard to believe that this game began life as a Jaguar title, as it bears many resemblances to Tempest 2000 in presentation.

The only flaws in this game have to do with slow down and pop up, for, as you rotate your sphere, you’ll see that things tend to just disappear. During the two player game is when the slow down rears it’s ugly head. Thankfully, neither of these problems really effect the gameplay.

By using the different magics available, you can clear multiple blocks at one time.

Definitely check this game out, Tetris fanatics may be disappointed, but, all in all, this is a very well done product. With over 200 levels and a great play engine, how can you go wrong?
