A few weeks ago Nintendo announced that this Spring the new and slimmer Nintendo DS Lite would be released in Japan, and we assume, the U.S. Recent digging on the Gaming Age Forums has revealed documents sent in for approval to the FCC regarding the Lite, which means the unit might not be that far off from releasing. One of the items for perusal was the DS Lite's U.S. instruction book. Below is one page that shows off all of the details of the unit:
As the illustration shows, the power button for the new DS is now located on the side. To avoid accidentally turning the power off, the button will need to be pressed for a few seconds. The stylus no longer fits into the top of the system. Instead, it will slide in next to the power button on the right hand side. The GBA port at the bottom now has a cover that can be used when no games are inserted to protect from dust. The AC power cord is not the same as any other current cord on the market, so that means you can't use your existing Micro or DS or SP cords with the Lite. In the lowest light settings the battery can last as long as 18 hours. The brightest setting will yield around 4 hours.
Initially after the DS Lite announcement, many people speculated that perhaps a firmware upgrade would be present. Wishlist items like online Pictochat, downloadable demos, etc. are nowhere to be found in the DS Lite. While the system is definitely smaller and the buttons look more comfortable, it won't be offering up any new features.
We expect more information regarding Nintendo DS Lite very soon. The release date shouldn't be too far off, so start saving those pennies.
