According to actual sales charts, MotorStorm has sold about 8,000 units by December 10th and probably a couple thousand or so more since then. So unfortunately, being the #1 PS3 game in Japan isn't a tremendous deal, especially with the extremely limited availability of he console. But for a western developed title, and an off-road racer, it's a decent start.

Runcorn-based computer games developer Evolution Studios is celebrating international success today, as its MotorStorm title tops the Japanese PlayStation 3 Charts. The games console – the latest in Sony’s incredibly successful family of games machines – went on sale in Japan late last month. And Evolution Studios’ thrilling, off-road racing game has proved the most one of the most successful game from the initial batch of launch titles – a stunning coup for the UK-based development team.
MotorStorm’s savage off-road racing throws players into a frighteningly realistic series of races spread across Monument Valley – a breathtakingly hostile environment above, below and over the American desert. Races are no-holds-barred jostle-‘em-up as players battle for racing lines, negotiate heart-stopping jumps and discover secret shortcuts in wheel-to-wheel races which redefine the word ‘carnage’. No two races are the same as courses are dynamically churned and deformed. The game offers the most free-form racing experience ever delivered, and a showcase for the processing power of Sony’s new hardware.
MotorStorm has been attracting scores of worldwide press attention, and the game’s rapid ascent to the top of the charts confirms that the public as well as press have fallen head-over-heels in love with its muddy charms.
“It’s a real coup for Evolution,” says Martin Kenwright, CEO, Evolution Studios. “Developing MotorStorm has certainly not been easy – but the team here really delivered. Evolution has a reputation for delivering high quality racing titles, but we really needed to up the ante with Sony’s new hardware. We’re delighted that the public has agreed with the press, and made MotorStorm the current Japanese number one PlayStation 3 title. We can’t wait to see how it performs throughout the rest of the world.”
MotorStorm is on sale in Japan for PlayStation 3 now. Release dates for America and Europe will be confirmed shortly.
