Unfortunate news for Nintendo fans: Masahiro Sakurai, creator of the Kirby platform series and the director of the successful Super Smash Bros. fighters, has resigned from HAL Laboratories. According to Japanese gaming site Quitter, Sakurai made the announcement in a weekly column he writes for Japanese publication Weekly Famitsu.

Quitter goes on to mention other points Sakurai made in his column. He isn’t jumping ship to another company – at least, not yet. Kirby games will continue at HAL Laboratories, but he is unsure of the future of Super Smash Bros. A few statements seem to indicate he wasn’t being allowed to develop the games he wanted at Nintendo; resigning gives him new freedom and opportunities.

Nintendo can’t seem to catch a break these days. Stay tuned to Gaming Age for the latest.
