Compared to the wait between follow-up Final Fantasy adventures on the PlayStation, the era of PlayStation 2 has been agonizing for fans. Square Enix has kept silent on Final Fantasy XII details long after its initial announcement, but in the coming weeks the title will receive a proper unveiling. And if you know where to look (
wink), you’ll be treated to an early glimpse of the game.
Though it’s far too early to pass much judgment on what direction Final Fantasy XII will take, the Gaming Age forum general reaction to the released material seems to be one of disappointment. Many believed the previously released artwork for the game signaled a bold new direction for the series, and feel what’s been revealed of the next installment isn’t too much of a leap from Final Fantasy X.
On the other hand, many members are confident in the staff conjuring Square Enix's latest epic, and are waiting for the game's official unveiling next week before casting doubts.
The Bad:
“I thought I read somewhere that Square was going to try for a unique style for this game. From that pic it looks very similar to FFX (and -2).” – Mr. Furious
“It looks exactly like FFX/FFX-2 from those pictures and character art. … I'll reserve judgement until I see more pics. I was expecting something much more different from a guy like Yasumi Matsuno.” – unicorn5
“I miss the ever-changing nature of the FF world... 7 was a great departure from 6, 8 from 7, and 9 was very different from 8, but this looks like FFX-3, like somebody mentioned. Boo.” – GameCubeM0nk3y
“I was expecting sometihng COMPLETELY different. That artwork poster had me going one direction, and then this all of a sudden looks like FFX, with an etremely feminine male character and slutty looking female character. I don't know man, I just had expected something way different than this. I hope the November 19th unveiling makes me feel better.” – VindicatorZ
“The teaser page had that beautiful artwork of a city, made the game seem so epic and magical. What a buzzkill.” –lltbg
The Good:
"I think this looks pretty sweet, and while the male lead does look hilariously metrosexual that shit never bugged me before. The cityscape still looks cool (and more medieval than steampunk, based on what little we see)." - Calder
"They aren't wrong for wanting something different, but they are wrong for bringing out the hounds of hells for this game for being 'ffx-3' sheerly based off 2 CG models and 2 15x15 blurry ass gameplay pics. That pic reveals LITTLE-NOTHING outside of the setting; and anyone who remotely played FFX SHOULD be able to see that they are nothing alike in atmosphere." - Nameless
"So far, I approve, though they really could have made his face a bit more male in appearance, but that could also be a camera angle issue. It would nice for Square to just let guys be guys someday." -MetatronM
"Looks good to me. You just can't please some people. :)" - Onion Baby
"I actually think it looks pretty cool. squares character designs are always top notch." - sp0rks
