Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. announced today that it will be entering a joint venture to be based in Austin Texas with Toshiba and IBM to develop advanced chips for a new wave a devices for the broadband era. The 3 companies will be investing $400 million to develop this technology with a goal to develop a "supercomputer-on-a-chip". The companies did not give specifics on which types of devices these new chips will be used for, but the Wall Street Journal reports that people familiar with the matter said the new chip will be at the heart of the PlayStation 3. The Emotion Engine and Graphics Synthesizer that power the PS2 were jointly developed by Sony and Toshiba. While IBM is providing the "Gekko" processor that will power the Nintendo Game Cube.
