Recently I was able to sit down and spend some serious time with the upcoming Guitar Hero II. Unfortunately, I'm lacking in both time and sleep, but I'll try to cover the basics.

For Guitar Hero II, the aim is to include forty licensed songs and twenty garage band songs.

Three button chords have been added, adding a new dynamic for those that've mastered the previous iteration. Returning players will also be interested to learn that hammer ons and pull offs have been tweaked to be slightly easier to perform.

New songs include "Stutter" by KISS and Primus' "John the Fisherman." Even cooler, "John the Fisherman" is the first licensed song performed by the original band, Primus had the original masters sent over to developer RedOctane.

Two new venues have been added, Vans Warped Tour and the Blackout Bar.

Also new is the much-requested Practice mode, allowing players to go back and go through songs one segment at a time. Co-Op multiplayer is also new, with one player tackling lead guitar and another tackling rhythm or bass. Furthermore, each player can now select their own individual difficulty levels, so that advanced players can jam with those new to the game. Oh, and to activate Star Power in Co-Op, both players have to hold their guitars vertically.

Guitar Hero II is shaping up to be the sequel everyone hoped it would be and then some. Check back with us after the show for more detailed impressions.
