Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 was playable at the Konami E3 booth. The game still seems very early and the slow frame rate and gameplay needs a big boost before this game becomes a decent beat-em-up.
The E3 demo was playable for up to four players, though most stations were setup for two. The levels selectable included one snow stage and a boss fight in a colluseum. The snow stage had a lot of new platforming elements like moving platforms and different elevations. But for some reason the turtles controlled like molasses. Each attack was slow and not even near the level of the first TMNT. The frame rate was at 30 fps but slowed down as well. At one point in the snow stage the level requires turtles to wall jump. The wall jump was perhaps one of the most difficult wall jumps ever. Pushing one direction during a jump then another worked half the time. Actions like platform jumping were also difficult because the turtle would fall right through a seemingly reachable platform.
The visuals are a bit different in the TMNT sequel. The character have the same cel shading but the backdrops don't resemble the simple, painted backdrops of the original. The environments are more complex and wide open. It's a welcome change considering four players will be on the screen.
TMNT 2 needs a lot of fine tuning. The game still has several months of development left. Here's looking to some better, faster turtle power.
