The PSone. It's cute, it's cuddly, and it's headed our way in September to commemorate the 5th anniversary of the Playstation debut in North America. Of course, Sony has a reason to celebrate. The Playstation is the best selling home console of all time and found in one of every four households. That kind of marketshare makes its mark in videogame history. And to celebrate - not to mention prolong the life of the Playstation - Sony has created the PSone. It looks really cool and can be hooked to an awesome LCD screen for semi-portable gaming. Not to mention the cellular hook up for downloading content (Japan only as of present time). But what does the PSone mean for hardcore gamers? Psone Fun At 1/3 the size of the original Playstation, the PSone has a nifty design and just looks plain cool. The LCD screen made specifically for the PSone is going to make for awesome portable gaming on long trips and in any boring vacation spot. And if the mobile phone connector will be released in the U.S., Sony will provide some sort of online content that could greatly add to Playstation games. LCD The 4 inch PSone TFT LCD screen has to be one of the greatest peripherals ever created. There have been so many times when gamers are dying to play their games but just can't due to cruel circumstances. The PSOne LCD screen will change that. You will be able to play the PSOne on a road trip or anywhere you can find an outlet. Plus, there will be no more itching to play an adventure or RPG game when away from the home. The LCD screen makes the PSone the first away-from-home home console. Get Mobile The mobile phone connector for the PSone provides a world of entertainment possibilities. Sony has not stated whether or not the mobile phone connector will be released in the U.S. but they are definitely looking into it. The ability to download content through a mobile phone connection would open up new possibilities for the use of PSone. The system could act as a data terminal in cars, with travel information downloadable at any region. And even a straight internet hook up with a web browser could make the PSone a relatively low cost internet terminal. Best of all, the mobile phone connector will work on the PS and PS2 - games and data from memory cards could be downloaded and uploaded to be shared with other gamers. Another Playstation? Here's the part that gets iffy. Tons of people already have a Playstation. If gamers want a portable Playstation they need to buy a PSone. The LCD screen was designed specifically for the PSone and doesn't look like it will hook up to a Playstation. Everyone that has a Playstation doesn't need another one, but will have to buy a PSone in order to take advantage of the LCD hook up. The library is closing Top developers are full speed ahead on developing for the next generation platforms. This means less time will be devoted to making top titles for systems of the past, i.e. Playstation. A PSone with an LCD hook up will be a great purchase for portable gaming, but we might have to keep playing the greatest hits of past as the PS library drifts into mass market software - making the PSone a more questionable purchase. Got money? The PSone is an attractive buy. And if you're hardcore and willing to buy another Playstation in the form of the PSone, you could be doing it to get the LCD hook up for portable gaming. It won't be the most practical purchase to buy another system just for portability and it won't be the cheapest. Sony hasn't set prices for the PSone or the LCD screen, but expect to spend at least 150+ dollars on the package. Plus the fact that the costly Playstation2 launch is around the corner doesn't help much either. What do you think? Is the PSone for you? Take our latest GA poll by clicking here.
