Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3
Exactly what Commando 3 should be.
Super Joe couldn't leave the ground no matter how hard he tried to jump. He couldn't run very fast. His machine gun had a peculiar range of about 15 feet and he could throw a grenade only slightly farther, but he could dodge bullets. His enemies experienced quick death spasm before disappearing forever, which was good because there were too many of them. The characters in Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3 have a lot in common with the main character from the heady days of 1985, and that's just fine.

You'll have three characters to pick from, but other than that it starts off a lot like Commando - you get dropped into hostile territory and have to fight your way out through scores of bad guys. The game controls consist of moving with the left stick and pointing with the right stick to fire. The right trigger tosses grenades, which are in limited supply, and the left trigger sets off an 'M-Crash' bomb that takes out most of what's on the screen.

The settings are colorful and are a great backdrop for wave after wave of idiotic enemy soldiers. You'll spend as much time dodging bullets as you do firing, and have to be wary of lookout towers and vehicles that can be tough to take out if you don't place your grenades just right. Along the way you can pick up health and a decent variety of new weapons, like machine guns, rocket launchers and a flamethrower. Oh, and you're also supposed to rescue the good guys in the cages.

But some of the best times are those spent in vehicles. When you hop in a Jeep, you'll go from a walking one man army to a rolling bringer of doom. You can run over the bad guys just as easily as shooting them, and the only bad thing to say about this new wrinkle to the classic is that the vehicle sections leave you wanting more.

Cooperative play over Xbox Live or PLayStation Network for up to three people makes an already frantic game a complete fiasco of bullets and explosions. The only drawback is using M-Crash, which is more trouble than it's worth when playing with others, and the length of the game. It's just over too quickly, but there are plenty of harder levels if you want to try it again.

Rarely do new versions of old classics manage to recapture what made the earlier games special while doing new things to bring the concept into a new era. But Wolf of the Battlefield succeeds. It's flashier, more detailed, more exciting and lets you play with friends while feeling a lot like Commando must have felt like way back before we knew any better.
