The Xbox 360 is really coming into it’s own with titles like Dead Rising and Saints Row being released for the system. For all you mech fans out there, (I am talking Mech Warrior not Mech Assault) Sega has the spicy meatball just for you. Brought to you by Developer FROM Software (think Armored Core series) comes a very solid Mech squad combat title that is paced more for strategy fans rather than pop and go shooter fans. Surrounded with stunning visuals, tight controls, and a great amount of replay value thanks to Xbox Live, Chromehounds fills the void left barren by this genre on the Xbox 360 thus far. You control ground Mechs that have no ability of flight, no boost, and move at a very gradual pace. If this sounds good to you, read on. Maneuvering you Mechs is effortless, as you will be taking down enemies, surveying the terrain, and blowing up friends online within minutes. A mission based tutorial gives you the gist, but the single player campaigns will show you more on how to better utilize weapons, customize you Mech, and dive into the squad based tactical action the latter levels and online play provide.
What FROM Software did well that will appeal to any mech fan is the customization that ensures that no two Hounds are alike. You choose from millions of parts, weapons, accessories, skins, and more. All this brought to you in a vivid, near photo realistic environment. Accompanying the wonderful visuals is an audio demonstration that will rattle windows and wake up the neighbors care of glorious 5.1 surround sound. Chromehounds is not all visuals, sounds, gameplay, and customization as there is much depth in this little known title. In single player, you can choose from over 100 maps and campaigns that will hone your skills and test your reflexes. You choose your role from various squad positions such as Soldier, Sniper, Defender, Scout, Heavy Gunner, or Tactics Commander. No matter which role you choose, you can utilize your skills on the sole reason to buy this game… online. You and 11 of your so-called friends can build squads or play in co-op battles over Xbox Live. What’s more, you can take you single player Hounds online and compete in modes like Capture the Flag, COMBAS Keeper, Death Match, Survival, and more. In the end, Chromehounds delivers a very solid Mech action that will appeal to gamers who appreciate the Mech Warrior series. It is a slower methodically paced title that demands patience and the ability to command squad units to be successful. If this sounds like fun, then get to your local game shop and we’ll see you online!
