TY the Tasmanian Tiger 3: Night of the Quinkan
More action from our friend from down under.
There have been many cool entertainment icons that have come from Australia; Men at Work, Mel Gibson, and who can forget gaming’s biggest Aussie, TY the Tasmanian Tiger. Krome Studios now gives TY fans another installment of their very successful TY series with TY 3: Night of the Quinkan.

In this chapter, TY faces his biggest challenge yet as an otherworldly invasion by an ancient evil known as the Quinkan threatens to destroy the planet. You regroup with the help of your friends from Bush Rescue and lead the fight against the dark oppressors.

TY’s visuals once again engulf you into TY’s platforming wonder. The worlds are large, uniquely designed, and extremely colorful. The enemies and bosses are intricately thought out and vary in size and scope through your adventure. TY himself has a ton of new animations, expressions and gadgets that will impress and amuse you at the same time. Even the lighting and special effects have been given a boost over previous versions of the TY series, so veterans will have new eye candy to feast upon. In the end, it is more of the same old TY, only better looking.

Audio in TY 3 is your proto typical Aussie humor, complete with accents and inside jokes and nuances that sum up the Australian lifestyle. The voice acting is superbly delivered and the dialog is well written, if not a bit stereotypical at times. The upbeat jungle and rhythm themes fit the action and atmosphere quite well and set the gamer in the mood for what lies ahead in the Outback.

The gameplay is shares similar ground with pretty any platformer. Each level has certain obstacles you must overcome, but with the help of your bevy of vehicles, gadgets, and friends, the ways to achieve success is countless. Enemies are not the brightest, so honestly the biggest challenge you will face is the level design more than the enemies themselves. This of course does not mean that the boss fights are a walk in the park though. Expect to repeat battles a couple of times to learn the timing and patterns of your end level foes in order to take them out. What TY sets out to accomplish is achieved, delivering a very solid platform title that can be enjoyed by both youngster and old school gamers.

TY 3 provides plenty of bang for your buck. The game includes more than 30 areas, 100 characters, customizable boomerangs that have more than 2000 combinations, inventive vehicles that will take you on land, sea, and air. They’ve even added a 2-player cart racing mode out of the box for instant head-to-head fun.

It is suggested that if you haven’t played though a TY title before, you should venture into a prequel first as most of the jokes and characters are at the assumption that you have played the others before. There is no doubt that fans of the series will be more than satisfied with the new levels, story, weapons, and vehicles. At under 30 bucks, how can you pass this up if you are a fan of the genre?
