Capcom Classics, Midway Arcade Treasures, Namco Museum, Activision Anthology – old arcade hits are available in spades for the current consoles. But Taito Legends takes the idea to a new level, an older level, if that's possible. Not every game in the collection is older than Pac Man, but any collection that has Space Invaders is, by definition, the oldest of the old school. Space Invaders looks exactly as it should. You can choose from two different levels of zoom to minimize the fact that your TV is a slightly different shape than these oldies, but other than that this is the Space Invaders you grew up with (or heard about from Grandpa).
Other classics, while not of the same pedigree of Space Invaders, include Jungle Hunt, Elevator Action, Bubble Bobble and Phoenix (which was never as good on the 2600 as it was in the arcade and, of course, here on this disk). Some lesser known names, though once they start you'll recognize the screen, include Battle Shark, Colony 7, Gladiator, Plump Pop and Rastan. Operation Wolf and Operation Thunderbolt were light gun mainstays in the arcades, and they're here, too. They look exactly like the old games, but this collection does not support light guns. Without the gun, they're not only less interesting in every way, they're harder. There's just nothing satisfying about them without the light gun. Rounding out the included games are Zoo Keeper, Continental Circus, Electric Yo-Yo, Volfied, The New Zealand Story, The Ninja Kids, Tokio, Plump Pop, Rainbow Islands, Tube It, Great Swordsman, Space Gun, Super Qix, Exzisus, Plotting, Thunderfox and the Space Invaders sequels Space Invaders Part 2 and Return of the Invaders. It's that time of the season again – try to find something for the old man that he doesn't already own. Collections of old school arcade games are always a safe bet, particularly at $20. Space Invaders needs no further justification for ownership.
