It's been a while since we first saw the crossover between SNK and Capcom. I remember back when Card Fighter's Clash came out on the Neo Geo Pocket Color. I thought there was a whole host of opportunities for this cross license deal. Here we are years later, even years after Capcom's two attempts at mixing the companies' fighting game characters, and we finally get to see SNK's shot at the same type of game. And therein lies the problem. Outside of the character art, backgrounds, and some subtle differences in gameplay, there's nothing new here worth looking into. There's really not a whole lot to say. This game is completely average in every way. If you're comparing it to Capcom vs. SNK 2, it pales in every category. The character selection is smaller. The variety of play styles (grooves) is missing. There aren't any team battles, which SNK practically created with the King of Fighter's series. And, to top it all off, just like Capcom, they're still drawing the characters in unbelievably dated low resolution. I don't know how you can continue looking at these games after playing the Guilty Gear series in glorious high resolution.
The fighting is just how you remember it. Nothing's changed. Capcom characters still feel almost exactly like themselves even though this is SNK's interpretation of them. Super moves and desperation moves are still available just like one would expect. If you're playing the single player mode, you can also count on SNK's famous cheap boss encounter at the end as well. SNK vs. Capcom is online through Live, but that's a small consolation. It was certainly smooth for the most part, a lot more so than Capcom vs. SNK 2. I've heard others say there are times with really bad lag, but such is the downside of relying on networks. Perhaps I just had a string of good days. This is always going to be a tough hurdle for fighting games because of the strict timing involved with the moves and combos. I'll put it right out there. You'd have to be a huge fan of SNK and Capcom fighting games, or completely new to the genre to be interested in this latest entry. As much as I'd like to give the game a lower score to dissuade the developers from continuing to put us through rehash after rehash, it's still an good game on it's own merits. Next head on the chopping block...Capcom Fighting Evolution.
