Lately, remakes and nostalgia have been all the rage. From feature films, TV shows brought to DVD, and even video games, no one is safe from the barrage of rehashing old ideas to make a profit these days. Do not get me wrong, I am caught up in the hype as well, I'm just stating a fact. This brings me to my latest review from Midway, their second in their Arcade Treasures line of products. The original Midway Arcade Treasures brought us some timeless classics, and some forgettable favorites. In Midway Arcade Treasures 2, the same can be said as there are a few games that can be considered as treasures, while others in the lineup aged rather poorly. Midway Arcade Treasures 2 brings 20 more arcade classics to home consoles for fans to reminisce and enjoy all over again. Sure, little Johnny may not remember any of these titles. He may have heard tales from us old folk who ventured into arcades, tossed down quarter after quarter, wasting away on a Saturday afternoon. Let this be said that this is one title, that without even the rating M for mature for the MK series and a few others, should be labeled so, because only those 17 and older may remember any of these titles in the first place. For the rest of us, I can pleasantly note that these arcade treasures are not ports from any console, but from actual arcade machines. The emulation for the most part is fantastic, with a few minor glitches here and there, but nothing at all that will take away from the pure enjoyment of these titles.
The list of titles this year is a mix of Midway's titles from the early 80's to the late 90's. Some are great, while others are not, but there are enough hits here to warrant the 20-dollar price tag easily. Even cooler is the fact that the games themselves are not the only showcase of Midway Arcade Treasures 2, as there are galleries and video clips pertaining to each game. In the Photo Galleries, you have access to cabinet art, advertising flyers, and other promotional and informational items. The video galleries are made up of interviews from production teams and creators and even marketing videos that were sent to arcade establishments to help promote their game. These are all bonuses for each game, and for nostalgia buffs, are a must watch. Each game on the list may come to you instantly, or you may have to play the game again to gather a remembrance. Each title has a configuration for difficulty, violence content, amount of continues, etc., but keep in mind that the settings are not the actual service menu from the motherboard like the original Midway Arcade Treasures had. Some titles are single player only, while others supports up to four players at a time. It is also nice to know that even though it is not on the back of the box, the game does support the ability to upload your hi-scores to Xbox Live. Here is what you can expect from Midway Arcade Treasures 2. APB- All points Bulletin, A cops and robbers game where you are the police in the pursuit of lawbreakers. You must meet your daily quota in order to move onto the next level. Hard Drivin', a stunt driving game that was one of the first to use full 3D polygons as terrain. Arch Rivals, ever wonder where NBA Jam got their major influence? This may be the game that is responsible for the two on two basketball title. Championship Sprint, A top down racing game that was a major hit in its day. Cyberball, Football set in the time of 2072 dealing with robots and exploding footballs. Kozmic Kroozr, a typical shooter that involves an alien trying to get home. Primal Rage, arcade fighter dealing with dinosaurs that is bloody and fun as well. Spy Hunter 2, the sequel to the smash hit is similar to the original, but not as polished or as fun. Total Carnage, an all out shooter based on war and destruction. Timber, a game based on lumberjacks... insert Monty Python reference here. Wacko, another mediocre shooter. Wizard of Wor, now here is a classic that just missed the cut on the first collection, and oldie but a goodie. Xybots, an interesting 3D style shooter that was sorely overlooked in arcades. Pit Fighter, brutish, sweaty men battling for bucks and babes. Rampage World Tour, play as favorites George, Lizzy, and Ralph to destroy cities, eat people, and take over the world. Xenophobe, a space adventure game where you try to exterminate alien life forms. Gauntlet 2, easily one of my favorite games of all time. Pick your character, collect the treasure, and make your way to the exit before time runs out. NARC, an elite team of drug busters attempting to take down a criminal syndicate. Mortal Kombat 2 and 3, this my friends is the reason why the majority of gamers will buy this title. You get full fledged arcade perfect ports of two of the greatest arcade fighters of the early to mid 90's. What a collection! Like I said, some hits and misses, but for 20 dollars, you get more than your money's worth here. Especially since they are all arcade emulations, and not ports from other systems or consoles. These are the actual games you played games in the arcade. If you are into the throwback era, than you can do no wrong in putting 20 dollars towards this collection. You must wonder what is in store for Part 3. The Rush Series, Hydro Thunder, who knows... But we can only hope.
