From the murky depths of the ocean surfaces a classic in movie monster history. That's right all ye' sea lovers, the great white shark JAWS is back, but this time in videogame form. The only way to do this right is to set the game from the shark's point of view, so now YOU are the shark. Is the idea of swimming through the ocean among unknowing swimmers, knocking them out of the water, then continuing to devour them intriguing enough for you? If not, how about I throw in the fact that the developers of the famed Ecco the Dolphin series helmed this project. The results? Ecco with an attitude and tons of blood and mayhem. The visuals in JAWS are incredibly detailed, even if the textures are a bit on the low-resolution side, with plenty of environments to roam about as you stalk your prey. The first sight of blood in the water is a cool experience indeed, but it is not until you continue to chomp on your helpless victim until they loose a limb where you find true satisfaction. Tie it all in with a great score including the John Williams JAWS theme song and you have a top-notch presentation title.
Controls are excellent with a surprising amount of depth to the attacks and maneuvers you can perform as the great white beast. What's more, if you are low on health, just eat a person or sea creature to regain lost energy. The biggest issue is that the camera tends to stray away from the action more time that not, leaving you frustrated when you miss your targets. With a storyline and tons of side quests, there is plenty to do and see in the ocean, from killer whales, squids and other ocean life, to people, tanker ships, and sunken treasure. The game is free roaming once you are passed the initial tutorial, so not completing certain objectives won't stall game play. The game is fun whether you are playing in small doses or a long sit-down marathon as there is plenty to do, see, and kill along the way. The best part of it all is that it retails for under 30 bucks! That is like a dollar an hour considering that's about how long it will take to find and do everything. | Huge game with plenty to do, see, and kill | | YOU ARE THE SHARK! | | Camera is a bit suspect | | No JAWS 3D mode? |
