 Grand Theft Auto Double Pack
The most successful game series on PS2 carjacks its way onto the Xbox.
No one expected Grand Theft Auto III to explode in the way it did, but millions and millions of sold games and content controversies later, Sony and Rockstar Games announced an exclusivity deal to keep the series on the PlayStation 2. The deal was expected to last past 2003, but maybe something happened behind the scenes; suddenly we have the Grand Theft Auto Double Pack, a dual-disc release of Grand Theft Auto III and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City on the Xbox.

Gamers shouldn’t head into these Xbox conversions expecting a remake of either title. Yes, the visuals have been bumped up a notch, but it isn’t anything radically different than the PC version released earlier this year. The frame rate has been stabilized and lighting effects aplenty have been added, among other minor updates. Custom soundtrack support is a welcomed addition, though its implementation makes it a bit awkward to take advantage of.

There aren’t too many pressing issues to discuss with the GTA Double Pack; not much of the car jacking experience has changed while transitioning to the big green machine. If you’re interested in more specific information on Grand Theft Auto III and GTA: Vice City gameplay elements, read through Gaming Age’s glowing reviews.

The GTA Double Pack’s concept is sure to mean several mountain-sized money piles for publisher Rockstar Games; packaging together two relatively quick-and-dirty ports for the price of a normal single release is genius. There’s no new content here, but you still have two absolutely fantastic games that have seriously impacted the future of gaming. You can’t go wrong.
