 Chicken Little
The sky is falling, and that's about the most exciting thing you'll find here.
Chicken Little is the game adaptation of the Disney movie released last year that saw Disney’s official transition from classical animation to the 3D CGI world. Being that it was a huge step for Disney to make, you’d think the movie would have at least been outstanding, but in all actuality…it was pretty bland.

However, I’m not here to give the movie a scathing review, instead, I’ll focus the hate and loathing on the game. Actually, the game is still a far cry from horrible, and it could have been a bit better if it didn’t feel so rushed.

The storyline is ripped straight from the film, with the levels pasted together thru cut scenes taken from the movie. There’s quite a few to be had, and they’re fairly long as well, so fans of the movie should enjoy that. The level designs are fairly well done, even though there isn’t much room for going off the beaten path. The designers have done a great job with making the levels diverse, and you’ll encounter quite a few stages that go above and beyond just being basic platforming levels. Some of these levels, (particularly anything involving a Fire truck) end up becoming more frustrating than fun, but you’ve got to give it to Avalanche or at least trying something different. Unfortunately the controls do a good job of hindering the experience. They often feel sluggish and unresponsive, and you’ll find that the stages that do involve a lot of platform jumps are pretty damn annoying.

In the visuals department, the game looks a bit undone. The character models are edgy, and the environments all look a tad blurry at times. Also, while the level design isn’t bad, they do tend to be a bit bland, particularly in the spaceship levels. The enemy selection is pretty boring too, you’re stuck fighting against robotic exploding Chicken Little facsimiles, small laser shooting orbs, a couple of bosses, and that’s about it. I figure that the movie probably didn’t offer a lot in the way of bad guy fodder, but a bit more imagination and innovation could have been used to spice things up.

The music is pretty sub par as well, which sucks when you get to thinking about how many classic and catchy Disney movie songs there are out there. Once again this is more of a failing of the movie than the game, but it still counts as a strike against the experience. The voices from the movie are all faithfully represented here, so at least that’s a little bit of a plus.

All in all, Chicken Little is pretty decent for a movie adaptation, but really doesn’t hold a flame against other console platformers. You’ll be better off watching the movie than playing it, and if you really feel the urge to play something fun, go pick up Psychonauts instead.
