Destroy All Humans! Big Willy Unleashed
Proof that not all aliens are cool.
You know that old saying "Third times a charm"? Well, that doesn't apply one bit to Destroy All Humans: Big Willy Unleashed, the third entry in the Destroy All Humans franchise appearing on the Wii this month.

That's not to say the first two games are awful, in fact, I enjoyed the first title quite a bit. However, the second one had little promise of improvement, and instead showed the signs of a franchise put to waste, and the third title pretty much confirms that. The script, gameplay, graphics and sound all manage to fall short from the previous two games, or at least meet the minimum standards that have been set previously. Nothing outstanding or new here folks, and that's the real shame.

For those not familiar with the series, here's a quick recap. You take on the role of an alien named Crypto, harvesting from humans in a parody version of the 1950's. The comedy in the first game was solid stuff, with plenty of sly references to different issues at the time, and just the right blend of story and humor to really make it work. Unfortunately, there isn't anything "sly" about the humor in Big Willy Unleashed (as if the name couldn't tell you that), now set in the 70's, and filled with enough lame dick jokes to make the writers of the Scary Movie series groan.

The biggest draw of this entry is the ability to control the Big Willy statues that advertise outside of a series of restaurants designed to poke fun at the Big Boy fast food chain. In the Destroy All Human universe, another alien named Pox uses the leftover humans from Crypto's harvesting to make the meat in his "beef" patties. So you'll be tasked with wiping out the opposition who are made up by the humans who don't take too kindly to eating their own kin.

The run and gun components from the previous two titles remain intact here, with a few weapons variations that try and keep things a bit fresh. Also, the biggest draw is the ability to control the Big Willy mechs, but they handle so closely to the spaceship that outside of visual aesthetics, there's isn't much reason to switch between the two.

The Wii control set up doesn't add much to the gameplay either. The remote movement is strictly mapped to controlling the camera, with all of your movements and attacks coming from either the nunchuk analog or the buttons on the remote. Outside of a small minigame or two, the game is basically mimicking the standard control set up of other systems.

The developers have tossed in some minor multiplayer modes as well, neither of which will hold your interest for long. One involves outdoing your opponent in controlling certain points on a field, and the other has you both working together to fend of waves of attacking troops. Why either mode was even included is beyond me, as the resources wasted here could have been applied to more important areas of the game.

Big Willy Unleashed looks exactly like the previous two titles, outside of some slight bloom lighting effects. The character models are starting to show their age, and the environments are pretty devoid of detail, and you get the feeling that they're relying on you having a zoomed out view in the vehicle mode to not notice the ugly texture work on the buildings and streets.

This might not be a highlight to bow out on, but it might be time for series to be put out to pasture, at least for a bit. Revamp the combat system, spruce up the looks, and come back with a script that entertains without going for the cheap jokes, and maybe you'll have something worth playing.
