Two characters and different gameplay for each is a completely refreshing idea that is captured very well in Threads of Fate. The RPG takes two young souls that both must find a mysterious Relic and beyond the differing storylines, two unique sets gameplay are born. Rue is a boy who must save a friend that was attacked by a monster and needs the Relic to do so. Mint is a bratty young girl who's succession to the thrown is taken away and needs the Relic to take it back. Both stories overlap once in a while, but the themes of both are very different. Rue's adventure is much more serious, while Mint has a tongue in cheek sense of humor that surrounds her quest. It works beautifully and lets the player experience two different themes that are both equally fun to play.
What makes TOF a blast is the gameplay system of each character. Rue has the power to change into different creatures that are commonly found in the game. Players can roam around as any creature and use the different abilities of each. Mint gets to use loads of magic spells on her quest. And it's easy to keep using spells because each creature you defeat usually leaves magic points behind. Both characters have a pretty fast action RPG gameplay nature that consists of run and attack. And battles are fun thanks to the different gameplay elements players get to use. A stirring soundtrack lies in each adventure. Rue has the more somber music for his serious adventure and Mint has light-hearted beats and quirky sounds to compliment her amusing adventure. Threads of Fate is even easier on the eyes with the solid engine Square built. The polygon world and its characters are seamless and move with a grace any gamer would enjoy. Square made this year the summer of the RPG and continues the tradition with the great playing Threads of Fate. Next up is Chrono Cross - and something tells me that'll end the summer with a bang.
