 Metal Slug X
Can't get enough 2D action? This'll fill you up.
The Metal Slug series has been a champion of 2D side-scrolling action. The latest Metal Slug translation to the Playstation, Metal Slug X, is a must-have import for any gamer can't get enough of 2D shoot-em-ups.

For those unfamiliar with the series, Metal Slug X is a remix of Metal Slug 2. There are some minor changes in the remix - some levels that were set in the daytime are now set at night, and bosses have been switched on various levels. But what hasn't changed is the blast you'll have when taking aim at the countless barrage of enemies on screen. The Playstation does an amicable job of handling multiple enemy sprites on-screen, with minimal slowdown even in 2 player mode.

There's nothing better than to blast your enemies with variety of weapons. In Metal Slug X, there is a countless amount of weaponry including heavy machine guns, rocket launchers, enemy chasing missiles, and laser guns to name a few. Another great aspect about Metal Slug X is the actual "slugs" themselves. Slugs are vehicles with special weaponry that players can ride on. In MSX, players can ride in the traditional Metal Slug tank, an airplane, or even a camel that's nicely equipped with rapid fire.

The visuals in MSX are has a completely unique hand-drawn look to them. The series has been famous for its incredible detail in animation that sports almost cartoon quality graphics. The limited ram in the PS has held back much of the animation from the original. But there's enough in there to keep the game from looking too choppy.

A blast from a rocket launcher can be heard quite well thanks to the loud sound in MSX. Each weapon sound takes precedence over the background music and helps to keep the blasting action as loud as it is on-screen.

There are a few extras in Metal Slug X for the PS that can't be found in the arcades. One is a combat mission school where players can be ranked according to how well they perform in certain levels. Another is a survival mode that lets players play for as long as they can stay alive. Both add some depth to the game, but most players will ultimately have more fun playing the arcade mode. There's also an art gallery featuring tons of drawings made from the game. Pictures of the game's four main characters - Marco, Fio, Tarma, and Eri, can be found in SD style and in some very humorous situations.

If you're a 2D shooting fan Metal Slug X is a must-have. It sports some great visuals and awesome gameplay that can't be beat by anything in the 3D realm.
