Buzz Lightyear received a cartoon spin-off after Toy Story 2 and Activision scored the license for it. There's really nothing new in Buzz Lightyear for the hardcore gamer, but its a action platformer that performs better than its Toy Story 2 counterpart. Each of Buzz's arch villains are located on a different planet. Each planet makes up a level in the game. Buzz gets to catch his enemies in varied locals like farm land, and an lava-laid planet. Unfortunately the gameplay is the same in each level. Players try to keep up and follow their arch enemy through the level while avoiding enemy blasts and environmental obstacles. At the end of the level is a boss confrontation.
The gameplay is fun, especially when Buzz gets to ride vehicles through the level. But the action is very easy and it's very hard for Buzz to die. If you fall into a lava pit, Buzz just hops right out. It takes getting shot a heck of lot of times for Buzz to eat it, and leaves the challenge level less than desired. The control in Buzz Lightyear is much better than the slippery control found in Toy Story 2. Buzz will stop on a dime when an opposite direction is pushed, and the camera keeps at the front of the action - much better than the crazy quick-swinging camera in TS2. Buzz is given a good arsenal of ray guns to zap his alien enemies with and a jet pack to help him hop over large gaps in the road. Within the level are coins and medals that players have to obtain in order to advance to the next level. In between levels are pretty cool clips from the Buzz Lightyear cartoon show. But there's no Tim Allen to be heard in this game. All the voice actors are taken straight from the TV show. Buzz Lightyear of Star Command was developed for a young audience. The game is easy and there's not much innovation in gameplay. But the platformer has a solid polygon engine and uses the cool cel-shading technique on Buzz on a few other characters. Help Buzz save the world if you're a big fan of the character, or if you just need to have an action platformer.
