Let’s face it; Army Men games are starting to wear thin. From the same stale engine, to the lack of a new or innovative story, the Army Men series needs a major overhaul, and now we come full circle to Army Men World War: Final Front. Not only has this game not added anything new to the series, but also it fails in the same categories as the past Army Men titles. Graphically AMWWFF sports the same drab green and tan characters, and backgrounds just as drab. If you’ve seen one Army Men game, you won’t be surprised with anything this new title offers. Backgrounds show off very low textures as well as backgrounds which seemingly wobble and shake. The 3D engine is showing its age to say the least. As with all the Army Men titles, you are treated with some of the nicest and funniest FMV intros. This is one of the very few reasons I still suffer through these titles. All in all the game isn’t as bad as all hell, but the engine does need changing.
Sound is on the average side as well. Funny voiceovers are the bright spots as you mostly hear booms and gunshots throughout the game. Honestly, nothing more is offered than any other action title. Control is easily better than last year’s World War title, but still feels awkward. Everything seems to move at a snail’s pace for starters. Targeting gets really frustrating, as hitting a foe from long range is out of the question. Another downside is how easy the game is. AMWWFF has to have the worst A.I. of all the Army Men titles. Each level is laid out in the same exact way with no variation at all. Controls aren’t necessarily twitchy, but you do get use to them after some time. Options aren’t an option, as you don’t have any reason to beat this game more than once. Nothing special can be unlocked, there are no hidden items, secrets or anything. Overall, if my review of this game seems drab and uninspired, that’s because the game itself is also drab and uninspired. The game isn’t bad; it’s just been done so many times before. Hopefully this is the last we’ll see of this type of Army Men title on the PS1 and we have our fingers crossed that the upcoming PS2 title revitalize the series. Only time will tell.
