One thing will go down in the annals of Playstation history. The undeniable fact there was never a shortage of Army Men games. Whether this a good or bad thing depends on how much you enjoy these games. I personally can live with or without them. I have seen my fill, but maybe a 128-bit version will rekindle my interest. Graphically the game is very bland. Textures are poor, either from the result of the aging PS One, or the developers running out of ideas. The frame rate seems to drop when too much is going on. While the game holds steady far better than the original SH, the game obviously needs to be on a more powerful system to survive. The frame rate also takes a hit when explosions and other special effects happen. This case in point is unforgivable although it gets so bad sometimes, it becomes virtually unplayable. Maybe with the transition to the PS2, the Army Men series can become a more enjoyable game with a stronger engine to work with.
Sounds are displayed in a strange mixture. The voices are done pretty well, but the music totally doesn't fit. Whatever happened to the idea of using the song "Flight of the Bumblebee?" Sound effects are sort of muffled and badly sampled. The variety of sounds was also weak. All in all, the audio could have and should have been better. Game play is pretty solid, but gets hampered when the game goes into its fit of slowdown. This is a shame, as I really would have enjoyed this game. The game is simple with a basic HUD system and easy controls. This once again makes one wonder what could have been done on a better system. I guess we'll find out in the next few months, eh? There are new worlds, new weapons, new characters, but it is still the same game. If this were done on the PC, SH2 would have been an add on for Sarge's Heroes. Honestly, there is nothing offered as new that makes me want to shell out 40 dollars of my hard earned cash. If you've played any of the 3D Army Men titles, you'll be all too familiar with what their latest version offers. If this is your first voyeur into the world of Sarge and Bravo Company, then you may enjoy romping through this title. All in all the game plays well, but really hurts in presentation, graphics and sound. This one you should rent, unless you are a die-hard fan of the series
