With the price of the PSP being what it is, the games being what they are, and the price of gas…well let's just leave it at that, it's nice that someone really cares. Namco gives you plenty of bang for you ever precious buck with the PSP version of their Namco Museum. Battle Collection brings together many of Namco's arcade classics and they even take full advantage of the PSP's wireless multiplayer functionality (via the WiFi Ad Hoc mode). Not only can you play for nostalgia bragging rights, but also NMBC offers a cool Co-Op mode where you can share the high score with a friend or loved one. Like it or not, the 80's are back, and like Duran Duran, they are not going away! There are over 20 titles that cover all the age old classics such as; Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man, Galaga, Galaxian, Rally-X, Dig Dug, Xevious, Bosconian, Rolling Thunder, Mappy, Tower of Druaga, Dragon Buster, Grobda, Motos, Dig Dug 2, and King & Balloon. Want more? How about revamped version of classic titles such as Dig Dug and Pac-Man in glorious updated 3D versions?
Granted even with the updated titles, the game isn't going to win any graphics of the year awards, but honestly, anyone picking this up knows that it is all about the game play and the quest for the high score. This is old school action the way it was when I was just a lad, and it is nice to see that the market for such games is still popular. A few cool features have been included to these flawless emulations including actual arcade dipswitches that allow you to set high scores, number of lives, etc. For those of us old enough to remember the days of the pizza parlor, there is an option that allows for you to turn or flip the screen sideways replicating the tabletop Pac-Man machines. Even though Namco has released a 50th Anniversary PS2, Xbox, GC edition, it really isn't much different from the previous collection, but what makes this one so special is that not only do you get some of the new added titles like Rolling Thunder, but a multiplayer feature which makes this the best of the Namco Collections thus far. Let's face it, these games are short and sweet and just made for the handheld market. Therefore, if you are looking for something to fill the void in your PSP lineup and you can't get enough of that old school feeling, then Namco Museum Battle Collection should be on the top of your list of games to own. Now Namco needs to make a Tekken/Soul Calibur collection and give us some titles with some graphical punch in one shiny package. You've got the ball rolling now Namco, time to take advantage of a good thing.
