MX Vs. ATV "On The Edge" is a great fit for the PSP. Rainbow Studios have for a long time dominated the Motocross racing genre and their newest foray into the PSP realm is nothing if not successful. All of the physics from the PS2 games is apparent in the handheld version, and the directional pad gives plenty of control in order to use it. You can lean forward on a down slope and yank back when you hit the next peak. It’s no difficulty at all to maintain your speed throughout the track by hitting the hills at the right speed and then lining up the descent with the far hill. The PSP version seems more forgiving than the PS2 version when it comes to collisions with other drivers. I was able to get into a situation where I got knocked off my bike, but it was obvious that a collision had occurred. The tricks are still in place and still very intuitive. Pulling back (down on the D-pad) on the handle bar does a back flip, while leaning forward performs a front flip. There are plenty of tricks to learn and they all earn you cash to unlock items.
The game has plenty of unlockable items, but no real career mode to speak of. You have to play through the tracks to unlock new ones and accumulate cash to spend on unlocked items. Besides being a solid port of the PS2 version, MX Vs. ATV On The Edge is a good fit for the PSP. There’s no real time commitment to playing. You can start up the game, jump right into a race and leave it at that. It’s a good fun game while on the road and a definite investment for motocross fans. | Great motocross physics | | Improved rider collisions over the console version | | Good control | | Perform tricks to earn cash | | Easy to pick up for a race or two | | No career mode |
