Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects
Even with not many PSP fighters available, your time would be better spent elsewhere.
To say the PSP is lacking games in the fighting/beat-em-up genre is an understatement. For those out of the loop, Marvel Nemesis is a licensed brawler by EA, which was also recently released on consoles (Click Here for that review). You get to play as big name comic heroes, including Spiderman, Thing, Wolverine, Iron Man, and much more! And for good measure, Marvel created some custom characters for EA specifically - some being pretty cool, while others being quite forgettable. Why EA went this direction instead of signing on someone HUGE like DC is beyond me. As is, Marvel Nemesis is a decent fighting game, but does not deliver on the hype factor that has been created around it.

Visually Marvel Nemesis for the PSP tries to mimic the comic license more so than its console cousin does. You have comic text screens and drawn comic style select screens that enhance the fact that this is a licensed title. Disappointingly, there are no cut scenes, drawn or otherwise, all you receive is a small, yet pointless, paragraph on why your opponent hates you so. The in game action looks very good, with tons of destructible items in the environment, dramatic lighting, and varied areas that are not terribly large or small. All the characters are wonderfully designed and animate quite well. You will have no issues knowing one character from another, even with the more unfamiliar EA characters. The camera does get in the way quite often which may cause for some concern during hectic later matches. Finally, the load times are very manageable and never break any rhythm that you may be in during the course of play.

Audio is very bland, with only music and sound effects to listen to throughout the game. No voice-overs or character catchphases, which is sad considering that the system is more than capable of producing it. The music is passable, with heroic overtones and an upbeat score geared to get you in that beat'em up mood. Sound effects are ported over from the PS2 version and do a good job with the crashing, the smashing, and the overall destruction of it all.

Gameplay, like the console version is very basic. Only a limited amount of moves are offered for each character, and even though you change characters throughout the game, you can't help but feel as if the game is just pallet swapping. Sure, the moves look different, but the game still feels the same no matter whom you use. The A.I. is surprisingly more aggressive than in the console versions, which leads to more exciting matches. Unfortunately, the low variances in the move sets keep the excitement limited to very small doses.

The PSP version of Marvel Nemesis has some exclusives going for it including environments, rewards, and characters such as Captain America. You also get to play Wireless one on one action if you and a friend both are in the same room. The story mode allows you to play with many characters, but the lack of any emotion or cut scenes make the story mode feel old after only a short time playing. The only reason to play further in the story is to play as someone else, but once you get there, you grow tired all over again.

In the end, I can only really recommend this to the die-hard Marvel fans as this is a pass as a fighter. Even with not many good fighters on the PSP or even on the horizon, your time would be better spent playing something else, or at least the more superior console version if you must get your Marvel fighting fix.
