It still bothers me that in a society that deems gaming nerdy and for dateless wonders, there are games released which magnify, to the onlooker, this stereotype. Seriously, do we really need a dating sim on the PSP or for any console for that matter? Are the buyers of this product looking for pointers and tips on the dating world? Well folks... here's a tip for ya…people are people and only you can decide your fate in love and happiness, so make the best of it and keep close to those who have the most in common with your personality type. You'll be a happier camper for it. That being said, if you still are wanting such a title for kicks, Konami has answered your beckoning call with Brooktown High. You pick your field of social status between the jocks, nerd, and outcast and try to manage making the grade in class and making the grade getting some ass. You will accomplish both through a series of mini games and conversation practices. While it is rated T for Teen, the writing in the game is quite juvenile and only drunk or stupid people would be caught saying these lines. Even funnier is the game pokes fun at the industry itself with lines such as "It's hard to find a decent guy these days, I think their brains get tainted playing too many video games."
Brooktown High allows you to chose date locales, choose your social circle, and interact with an eclectic group of characters, brought to you in a "choose your own adventure" style RPG game play style. The visuals are the Brooktown High's strongest asset. The character models are nicely detailed, as are the environments in Brooktown. The random character generator gives the town a lively experience without having inhabitants looking like just pallet swaps. Audio is generic though, with a low amount of vocal samples and even worse music that fills the void. Even with a decent variation of mini games and mild length to the story mode, Brooktown High suffers from the lack of any multiplayer options, which a dating MMO would be more suitable, provided you have a monitor for all those sickos out there. Nevertheless, the game can be conquered in one sitting, unlike real life where it takes someone what seems like an eternity to find that special someone. If you are looking for some quirky fun or something for your tween who giggles at words like fanny and likes teen idols and billboard charts, then Brooktown High may be that perfect get away all you parents are looking for on a cross country ride. Everyone else just hit a club or bar and use the money for buying someone a drink so they can be that someone special for the night.
