 Warship Gunner 2
Ship to Ship battles? Check. Submarines? Check. Fun? Er...
I went into Warship Gunner 2 not knowing what to expect. I had never played (nor heard) of the first one, and my sea-faring military knowledge is pretty limited to say the least. I do enjoy a good game of Battleship every once in a while, but I didn’t notice any red and white pegs anywhere in sight. That’s a real shame indeed, because this game could learn a thing or two from the old school board game when it comes to actually being fun.

Warship Gunner 2 is fairly light on plot, and more focused around the engagements. The basic story is set in some undetermined time frame, where some crazy war machine government is attempting to take over the world, while the rest of nations team up to defeat them. The game is peppered with small anime/manga style cut scenes that try to explain what the hell is going on, but by the time you reach the midpoint in the game, you’re not going to care too much.

WG2 is incredibly boring. I haven’t played a game that’s managed to bore me to the point of sleep in quite some time. When you begin the game, it will be absolutely necessary for you to jump into the tutorial first to learn the controls, in and outs of ship design, and how to issue commands in battle. You have to learn these commands for both a Warship and a Submarine, and the entire process is so drab and unexciting that you’ll end up having more fun watching your paint dry, maintaining an ant farm, or pulling weeds, than you will sitting thru this massive tutorial.

Finally, once you finish all that, you’re ready to participate in some big time exploding ship action, right? Wrong. Not that there isn’t some destruction to be had in each mission, but the look of the game really takes away from the impact of blowing an enemy vessel to high hell. There’s no oomph to the destruction, and the graphics are on par with something you would have found on the PS1. The environments are bland, boring and identical, and the ship designs look like little gray blobs floating on moving blue paper. I can’t imagine who decided that hacking out some low quality textures would make for a decent game, but that’s exactly what you have here.

The controls for Warship Gunner 2 aren’t all that bad. The ships don’t move quickly, nor can they turn on a dime, but that makes sense because obviously they can’t in real life. It’s easy to navigate your various weapons, and to issue out commands to a flight squadron, so the layout itself isn’t bad at all. Aiming can get a bit tricky if you’re not using binoculars or a scope, and the hit detection doesn’t always seem spot on. It also seems like ships are able to out range you in fights, which is especially annoying when you’re trying to retreat to perform some much needed repairs.

If you have some extreme mad-on for Navy simulated warfare, Warship Gunner could possibly appeal to you. Otherwise, there’s absolutely nothing fun about this “game”. Unless you’re performing some mad experiment to actually bore someone to death, I’d definitely stay away from this one.
