Truck racing fans have finally received what they have been begging for on the PlayStation 2. Super Trucks Racing by XS Games, due out this November, is a slightly different take on the racing genre, and a game which will make truck racing fans a happy bunch of racers. For starters the game will be released at the price of only $14.99. Now for fewer than 20 bucks there can’t be much under the hood right? Wrong! When looking at Super Trucks one is reminded of NASCAR Truck racing, as each vehicle has a sponsor to choose from, tons of dynamics to tinker with, and a famous driver to guide through the turns. Sure these guys may not be as noticeable as Jeff Gordon, but to the Trucking world they are just as important.
Visually the game is pretty decent, with a nice variety of tracks, great detail in the trucks themselves, and some fantastic collision physics. The sense of speed is present too, and considering these are trucks, you still feel blown away at times when these rigs run at over 150mph. Multiple camera views, including cockpit are here, giving you the perfect perspective you desire. Even the presentation is top notch with easy to navigate menus for choosing game play and fine tuning your vehicle. While lacking in some sounds, like pit crews, and commentary, the game does a typical job in the audio department. All running at a smooth framerate makes it all seem much more than a budget title. The gameplay turns out to be quite surprising. In the racing world you either get it right, or wrong, with little leeway in between. Tight and responsive handling is key in racing games and Super Trucks doesn’t disappoint. The weight difference may take stock car fans a few laps to get the feeling down, but once you know how your truck performs, it’s a free-wheeling race to the finish. Toss in some extremely competitive A.I. and this is a gem for racing fans. There is a lot of bang for your buck in Super Trucks, with over 16 tracks, 15 customizable trucks, and two player mode, you’ll feel happy when you get a game and change for your 20 dollar bill. Unfortunately there isn’t any way to make a fantasy driver, or do any paint jobs on you vehicles, but what is present is more than your moneys worth. With great handling, nice visuals, and tough A.I., Super Trucks is easily worth the purchase at only $14.99. For trucking and stock car fans, this is a no brainer. For everyone else in the racing world, it’s worth your time.
