Nothing is more gratifying than, after a hard day at work, being able to destroy one of man's great creations. Even better is when you can destroy a ton of them with little or no remorse to the people, objects, or dangers that lie in your way. Rampage: Total Destruction allows you to vent, but in a humorous way thanks to B movie surroundings, hilarious one-liners, and tons of inside jokes for pop culture fan. While the visuals haven't taken a huge leap over what you know and love from the series, the extra textures, shading, animations, and lighting effects still make it pleasing to the eye, if yet a still old school in design. Each level has a particular theme filled with great references and digs at successes and failures on modern pop culture.
The flavor of the series remains true when it comes to gameplay terms. Your objective is to annihilate the city and neighborhoods, the more you destroy, the higher your score. Helping you along the way is some new game play mechanics. The new rage meter increases as you do more damage to the environment. Once full, you are able to unleash a super move upon your helpless city that is quite gratifying. Hidden in many localse are power-ups that increase your health, rage, score multiplier, damage multiplier, strength, speed, and more. Toss in a bit of co-op or competitive action for up to four players and you have yourself a city that will never sleep. While the levels are short romps of demolition fun and goodness, there are a load of them to weed your way though. With seven huge cities and plenty of neighborhoods within them, you are looking for more than 80 levels that provide a smashing good time... pun intended. If that wasn't enough, throughout the game, you'll be able to unlock more than 25 playable monsters in addition to the classic three from the by gone era. But wait, that's not all; If you want some nostalgia, included in this package is the original arcade versions of Rampage and Rampage: World Tour! All this crammed into a nice tight 20-dollar package that even junior with his allowance can afford. Sure, when it is all said and done, Midway has kept to the proven formula and has changed very little in the 20 years of updates, but rest assured that Rampage: Total Destruction does exactly what it sets out to accomplish. It provides a great old school time, with plenty of levels and things to destroy in them that you can enjoy I short bursts. Any fan of the series will be more than ecstatic with this rendition. | Tons of levels and unlockables | | Remains faithful to the series... | | ...maybe a bit too faithful for today's audience |
