 Mega Man X Collection
Missed some past Mega Man titles and collections? Here's your chance to catch up.
Mega Man has been collected, redone, rehashed, reformatted and recycled - there's no ignoring him. Most people don't want to: Mega Man offers some of the purest old school side-scrolling action to be found on modern consoles. But because of the wide variety of sequels and collections available, the release of another collection of older Mega Man titles doesn't make the splash it otherwise would. Regardless, this collection of Mega Man X through X6 is worth playing if you're a fan, and it includes one installment not available outside the original release.

A little over a year ago, Capcom released the Mega Man Anniversary Collection (Click Here for the review). That collection represented the very early days of the blue bomber, while this disk contains what could be considered the second generation. The X collection is home to a look back at Mega Man's early days on the Super Nintendo through to the Playstation.

Games X through X6 offer a slightly different Mega Man than the very early titles. He's slightly less cute, he's joined by a fellow robot hero named Zero, who prefers to fight up close and personal with a sword instead of a gun, and he's got a few more abilities, like clinging to walls. But generally, all of these games offer the type of action you know from days long past - you scroll from left to right and take out the baddies as best you can. When it comes time to take out a boss, you end up with his weapon in your arsenal once he's dispatched.

What sets this collection apart is the inclusion of Mega Man Battle and Chase, which has not been released previously in the U.S. It's the only Mega Man racing game ever made, so if you're a completist and haven't had a chance to play, you can do so now. It's a very simple kart racer and is nice for a diversion, but that's about it - expecting it to stand up to modern competition would be unreasonable.

All the titles are emulated very well, so veterans will be very happy with this trip down memory lane. Enjoyment of the X Collection will hinge on whether you enjoyed these games in the first place, because there isn't much content to be found aside from art galleries. But fans of the series and those who like the sort of action Mega Man provides will be very happy.
