 Bombastic
A difficult if satisfying puzzler that requires heavy knowledge of the six-sided die.
Study the six-sided die. Study it well. You'll need to if you want to have fun with Bombastic. The sequel to the PSone cult classic Devil Dice has players rolling dice to match the top face numbers. The concept works, but to connect dice in a quick manner most players will need to study dice manipulation for hours.

Bombastic has a number of play modes including Trial Mode, Quest Mode, and War Mode. Trail Mode features several play options that use the basic rules and can be played by two players. Quest Mode moves players to different worlds and stages where you have to combine dice while dealing with enemy attacks. War Mode lets up to five players duke it out with exploding dice. If there aren't that many people around up to four CPU players can take their place.

The rules in Bombastic are simple - match and connect like-sided die together to eliminate them. Players must match the top face of each die according to their numerical value, such as two 2's and six 6's in order for them to explode. A chain reaction can me made when dice with a numerical value one less than the exploding one is placed in the explosions' path.

Here's the hard part. Each die has to be rolled into the correct position and all top faces of the die must have matching numerical values in order for them to explode. Rolling a die into position in which the top faces of each die match is tremendously difficult for beginners. The player is only allotted a certain area to roll a die into position, and in most cases people will simply keep rolling until the top faces match up by chance.

The tutorial does mention two useful strategies. The first is that the opposite sides of a die will always add up to 7. For example the number 1 and 6 are opposite each other on a die, which means if you roll a die over with the number 1 twice, you'll see the number 6. Another rule is that a die with a number on its side can be rolled an infinite amount of times to the left or the right before being turned up into position.

Once you've gotten to gripes with some of the strategies, Bombastic is a fun puzzler. The war mode in particular is a frenzy of explosions that's very fast-paced, haphazard fun. The game's fun however depends on the players' knowledge of how a six-sided die can be manipulated to have the desired number on its top face. It's not easy to do, and only after that hurdle is crossed can players enjoy any aspect of the game.
