I’m sitting here contemplating how to write about a game with the sheer size and scope of Final Fantasy XI, stressing about how hard it’s going to be. Then it hit me, it’s so easy. There’s no better testament to a great game then how much pull it has on you; how much time you feel you need to spend with it. The first third of the FFXI has been so good, I’d give the recommendation to buy even if this was all there was to it. I’ve already spent more time with it than I have the last three RPGs I’ve played combined. I’ve already covered all the basics in the two FFXI journal entries. So please take the time to read them here: FFXI Journal. I just want to emphasize a couple of points. People generally feel very strongly about MMORPGs one way or the other. Personally, I’ve been in love with the idea and hated every execution of it thus far. FFXI manages to mend the idea of a persistent online community with a story, graphics, and an intuitive interface that begs to be played when other responsibilities rear their ugly head.
Final Fantasy XI certainly borrows from MMORPGs of the past few years, but it has made significant strides in important areas. Battle animation makes you feel like you’re actually hitting and doing damage and sports some pretty nifty special effects. Party dynamics are great, and the skill chains that combo from one party member to the next adds some much needed spice to camping an area. The ability to take any job and compliment it with any sub job has many bonuses. It allows you to try all jobs and combination of jobs with one character. I’ve found it handy in starting a new job from scratch to join a friend who has recently purchased the game, allowing you to still play together. There is surely room for improvement like there is in any game, and for that reason, we don’t give out “A+”s. Like I said in the beginning though, this is a very easy recommendation. Good interface, great gameplay, Final Fantasy universe, and a friendly community all contribute to an excellent final product. If only there were more time in the day to play.
