 Dragon's Lair HD
Dirk the Daring returns - in High Def.
Anyone who grew up in the 80's and lived in the arcades remembered the wave of LaserDisc Full Motion Video arcade titles. You had Mad Dog McCree, Space Ace, and one even from the creators of Lupin the 3rd called Cliff Hanger. However, the king of kings in laser arcade games is unquestionably Dragon’s Lair.

A ‘hero saves the damsel in distress’ tale features Dirk the Daring on a quest to rescue Princess Daphne from the clutches of an evil wizard and guarded by Singe the Dragon. There were many interesting enemies from the giddy goons to the Lizard King (he can do anything…ride the snake), all beautifully animated by Don Bluth studios. For the unfamiliar, Don Bluth also created the animated films An American Tale, Pete’s Dragon, and the Secret of Nimh.

The game allowed you to not only enjoy the animation before you, but also interact and change the outcome of each level. Sure, in 2006, it seems a bit poignant, but back in the early 80’s it was revolutionary. This HD port is by no doubt the clearest and smoothest translation of the arcade classic, which includes all the levels, death scenes, and secrets you have come to know and love as a Dragon's Lair fan.

Even though the technology is a bit dated, the presentation does require a decent PC to run the laserdisc port in HD resolution. There is even a watch option for those who just want to relive their days of circling around the arcade cabinet being the onlooker and not the participator.

Sadly, there is no bonus content whatsoever, so what you see is what you get...a High Definition version of the classic arcade game. Why there is not any making of, additional games of the series or other laser games packed in is puzzling, as fans of the game will no doubt beat the game in one sitting.

Overall, if you want to reclaim some precious nostalgia from your past, in High Def, then this is the definitive version of Dragon’s Lair…bar none.
