There is a phrase I'm certain that most of us have heard, and that's "a classic never dies". Well if this is true, Namco sure is taking that literally as they keep shelling out their archived titles to every platform in existence. Not that anyone who doesn't enjoy a great classic title would gripe too much, but you would hope by now they would just say... okay, everyone's played Pac-Man. Nevertheless, Namco has brought their classic arcade titles to the DS, now with touch screen options…oh, did I mention only for the menus? Namco delivers the goods, but for the sizable DS space, this port seems a bit shallow on content considering the size of the original arcade board memory. Does this mean we are to see another installment with the omitted titles in the future? Most likely. What you do get are a handful of Namco's best including Pac-Man, Galaga, Dig Dug II, Xevious, The Tower of Drugaga, Mappy, Galaxian, and for the first time on any other console beside the GameCube, Pac Man Vs.
Now there are some greats in this collection but why is Tower of Drugaga in this collection or any for that matter. Didn't Namco learn the first time when they released this game on Namco Collection 3 on the PS1 and it sold miserably in the states? Please Namco; leave that game in Japan next time you decide to open the vault. The only title you may not be too familiar with is Pac-Man Vs., which basically is Pac-Man, but the catch is one player controls Pac, while 3 others get to be the ghost and chase you. You can do this single card download play, or even wireless multicard play. The game was a ton of fun on the GameCube, and with the DS, it's even better thanks to no screen sharing. There are the typical goodies provided in Namco Museum DS, including dip switches and documents telling about the history of the games. Having no worldwide online servers is kind of a bummer considering that it almost seems made for it, if only to even download high score leaderboards. If you really need to play these games for the umpteenth time, then for 20 bones you can't really beat this deal. I just wish more games were on it in order to say it is a must buy for all, not just nostalgia buffs.
