When was the last time you can remember Nintendo giving away something, anything, for free? Yes, it has been quite some time. However, now Nintendo has put together a GameCube bonus disk that might be one of their most anticipated titles of the year. Zelda: The Ocarina of Time (GA's old, old N64 review here) is considered by many to be the greatest game in the Zelda saga, and now Nintendo is giving it away free to the faithful fans who have pre-ordered the upcoming, Zelda: The Wind Waker. What this special pre-order disk includes is the original Zelda: Ocarina of Time, which debuted on the Nintendo 64, ported directly to the GameCube with a few small enhancements. Along with the original game, Nintendo has also included another version of Zelda: OoT simply titled, the Master Quest, which is a reworked, tougher version of the original. It is somewhat similar to the second quest in the original Zelda title for the NES. But wait there's more! Also, Nintendo put movies of their newly released and upcoming games. Movies/Trailers of F-Zero, Wario World, 1080, Zelda: The Wind Waker, Metroid Prime and Zelda: A Link to the Past are all included on the Nintendo bonus disk.
Graphically, Zelda: The Ocarina of Time remains pretty much the same as it did before; however, it is now much sharper and crisper than what was seen on the N64. The bump into high-resolution has done wonders for this game, making it much more vibrant and colorful this time around. The controls in the GC versions of Zelda are airtight, even more fluid and responsive than the originals on the N64; the layout on the GC's controller easily adapts the control scheme from the N64 versions of the game. Moving Link is done of course with the main analog stick. The C stick on the controller allows you to select any of your quick set items. Also the C stick allows you to send Navi to do its duties, as well as allowing you to look around in first person mode. The A button serves as your main action button, to talk to folks, read or check signs, start to climb and grab items. The B button in the GC version of Zelda allows you to swing your sword, as well as cancel selections from the menu screens. What Nintendo has done is created the coolest bonus disk ever! Two different versions of what many think is one the greatest games in the Nintendo library, along with bonus videos. The move is simply groundbreaking for Nintendo or any other company. As gamers we can only hope that this sets a standard for companies everywhere. Posters, T-shirts and holographic inserts are nice, but, what gamers really want is more games, and previews of forthcoming games. As silly as I feel reviewing a bonus disk, this sets the bar higher for what companies can do to please their loyal customers. Do yourself a favor, preorder Zelda: The Wind Waker today, and get yourself a great, free game in the process.
