 P.N.03
A fun if flawed shooter that's less graceful than it should be.
If you've never seen a robotic femme fatale who cares just as much about style as she does about destruction, you will in P.N.03. The GameCube exclusive attempts to add grace and beauty while players destroy robotic antagonists, but winds up stumbling to an adequate shooting experience.

P.N.03 stars Vanessa Z. Schneider, a freelance mercenary who's parents were killed by CAMS – a computer arms management system. Bent on destruction and the urge to dance, Vanessa is called in to bring CAMS under control.

Vanessa is equipped with a body suit that lets her shoot from her palms and send out energy drive blasts that take out multiple enemies. As players progress through the game Vanessa can buy more powerful suits that have better offensive/defensive capabilities.

The main character is pretty agile and has a number of moves to help her dodge fire. Besides jumping, the triggers are used to dodge left and right, while the Y button executes a crouch. In crouch position Vanessa can roll left and right via the triggers, or up and down with the analog stick.

The targeting system will automatically target an enemy in your sight. But the X button will switch up targets on the fly. However the camera won't follow an enemy that's targeted, making it difficult to keep track of a fast-flying robot.

Vanessa's main attack will be her trusty palm shooter. The A button needs to be pushed rapidly in order to shoot in succession. Each enemy's life bar is displayed right over their body. Destroying one enemy automatically initiates a combo window. If you destroy an enemy within a few seconds of the last, the hits will combo and rack up more points to be used towards upgrades.

In each level a pink energy ball resides to let players purchase suits, upgrade armor, shot power, energy driver power, and even buy more continues. On normal mode, P.N03 is quite a challenge, and the more upgrades and continues, the better. Players are also given these options in between each level, and offered to save or play trial missions to earn more points.

Sadly, the fast-paced action is too much for the robotic dancer. Quite simply, Vanessa is too slow. Jumping left and right is horrendous as Vanessa does a weird non-evasive twirl in the air. The crouch rolls in any direction are also slow and do little to help evade in tight situations. The game's action is too much for the main character. Turning and backing up are also slow and useless.

Besides the dusty desert area, most of P.N.03 takes place in metallic corridor environments. Most of the areas wind up looking the same. A lighting scheme that didn't make everything bright white would have worked great, but there's not a great visual impact in the game besides the choreography. The graphics hold at a solid 30fps with a few bells and whistles in the special effects department. Though the title certainly isn't a visual standout by any means. The sound consists of standard upbeat techno tracks and fit the intense on-screen action.

P.N.03 is a decent shooter and would have been great had the character been given enough speed to match her robotic peers. But if the mercenary job doesn't work out Vanessa can head to Soul Train and strut her stuff.
