Krome Studios’ little Tiger from down under has had great success over the last few years. While obviously not as huge as Sonic, Crash or Mario, Ty has a cult following of its own, and they are loyal as can be. Earlier this year we got to check out Ty’s latest console adventures, but does the GBA version capture what makes this series so appealing? In this latest adventure, the evil Quinkan have invaded Ty’s Australian outback, intent on destroying Ty and his friends. Ty must reunite with the Bush Rescue Squad to battle the Quinkan and discover the evil force controlling them.
Visually, Ty looks very impressive on the Game Boy Advance. The backgrounds are lush, varied, and full of detail. Ty and the game’s characters all animate very fluidly, bringing the game to life. Even the environmental and special effects push the GBA to its limits with surprising results. While still a side scrolling platformer in every sense of the word, Ty does add some visual flare that allows it to stand out on its own. Audio is charming, but nothing out of the ordinary. A catchy score fills your adventure with upbeat tempos and moody boss battle music. Sound effects are cartoon-like with plenty of swish, bang, and boing sounds. Sadly, no voices are present in the game. Even though the GBA’s power is limited, there have been games that have used sound bites in the past, but alas, none are found here. Ty on the Game Boy Advance is a fun little platformer that will challenge your dexterity and timing, but never your patience. The game’s main problem lies in the difficulty, as it is far too easy. Any veteran of this genre will breeze through this in an afternoon. It also must be mentioned that beyond the gadgets and weapons, Ty is as basic of a platformer on the GBA that you can find. This is not true of the console versions, which added uniqueness and flavor that you do not see in other titles, but the GBA version is standard fair. Not to say that Ty is a bad game, which is not true, but fans of the genre will find no real surprises in this adventure. Overall, if you are aching for a new platformer on your GBA, or just love the Ty series in general, then you will not want to miss out on his latest adventure. For everyone else, it depends on how much you enjoy side-scrolling platform titles.
