Not a bad title for shooter/action fans, and maybe even the best game in the series.
The Army Men series, to be blunt, has gotten rather stale. Now with the Game Boy Advance out and 3DO putting their bid into the shuffle, is it worth the purchase? I would say a definite maybe. Considering you like action titles and shooters to boot. Honestly this is a decent surprise, and one that wouldn't necessarily taint your GBA library.
Graphically this isn't the best game to showcase your new 32-bit handheld. The environments are small and really don't show much detail. It actually looks as if it could've been done on the GBC. Nothing flashy or special here, but that's not where it counts in this title.
Sounds are actually really decent. Voice samples are fairly well done for dying and speech. The music is arranged very campy like, but obviously was meant to be. Finally the sound effects are pretty well done, especially if you are using earphones. Gunshots and explosions are represented quite well for a handheld. There's nothing here that merits turning the sound down, but it really does sound rather good.
Control takes a hit when aiming, but once used to the controls, you'll walk through this title easily. Maybe a bit too easy, as Army Men Advance is geared more for kids in the difficulty department.
Options hurt the game a bit with the lack of multiplayer goodness Army Men Advance is also on the short side, which doesn't help much either.
All in all, paying 40 big ones for this may be hard to swallow, so pick it up cheap if you can. As for some saying the game is kiddy…I disagree. The difficulty level is a bit of a let down, but as far as the content is concerned, that's like saying Toy Story is a kids movie. If you can let your pride down for a couple hours and enjoy the game for what it's worth, you may find you have a good purchase on your hands. I actually found myself enjoying this trip back to old school game play more fun than most of the last dozen Army Men titles. If you've played all the Game Boy Advance titles so far and passed this one up, give it a go, it's actually pretty fun…and that's what counts.
