 Arcade Advanced
Konami delivers the standard for all future arcade compilations on the GBA.
Companies’ cashing in on gamer nostalgia by overcharging for lackluster ports of gaming classics is something we have seen on the PlayStation and PC too much already. The Game Boy Advance is a prime target for this evil plot, but if companies follow the lead that Konami has set with Konami Collector’s Edition: Arcade Advanced, there will be nothing to worry about.

There are six different games included in the package: Frogger, Yie Ar Kung-fu, Time Pilot, Gyruss, Rush ‘n Attack and Scramble. I’ll be honest: upon inserting the Arcade Advanced cartridge, the only game I had prior playtime with was Frogger and I had only briefly heard of Rush ‘n Attack. Thanks to Arcade Advanced, however, I’m not well versed in the origin of the fighting genre, can safely save several P.O.W.s using only a knife without breaking a sweat and have traveled to Earth and back a few times in a dual laser shooting space ship.

All of the games have been faithfully ported to the GBA. Every pixel, every blip and bloop that was found in the arcade counterparts is present in the ports. In fact, Konami has actually added to each of the games. Except for Gyruss, every game has a multiplayer component to it that can be played with or without (you will have to wait through some loading) a second cartridge. Not only that, but by entering in a code made famous by Konami, graphical updates to Frogger and Scrambler (complete with three ships with unique abilities) become available. Time Pilot and Gyruss have entirely new stages tacked on!

There are very few complaints about this package. The controls in Time Pilot are bit difficult to get used to. It might have been easier to allow a control option that would allow the left and right arrows to entirely control movement instead of each direction have an individual purpose.

Arcade Advanced is an example of the perfect way to bring a compilation to the GBA. It includes everything from the classics, plus extras to keep people coming back for more.
