It's a no brainer for a publisher to spread a successful franchise to as many consoles as possible. But Tony Hawk's Pro Skater for the Game Boy Color just doesn't work. There is a decent half pipe mode, but the Tournament Mode is now one big race to the finish line with little time to pull off any of those famous tricks. The Half Pipe Mode is the part of Pro Skater that most resembles its Playstation counterpart. The mode lets you move left to right on a halfpipe and chain combos together as you gain more air. Moves are performed by pushing a direction and either B or A. It also takes a little time and effort to land your tricks. There isn't much variety in this mode, but it captures the essence of Pro Skater.
The Tournament Mode is a vertically shown fast-paced race against competing skaters that does little to remind gamers that they are playing anything remotely close to Tony Hawk's Pro Skater. There are rails and plenty of ramps to jump off of, but winning the tournament depends on who gets to the finish line first. The CPU seemingly races by you everytime, hardly giving the player a chance to pull off any tricks, or have any fun. There are different locations to race in but they all look the same. There is a link mode and one on one versus CPU but both use the Tournament Mode to play. Pro Skater is all about pulling off tricks, eating it on the cement, and enjoying every minute of it. And the GB Color version hardly captures any of that.
