Spider-Man leaped to the Playstation with smack and punch gameplay and a decent graphics engine. Treyarch’s port to the DC keeps everything intact and slings DC owners into old-fashioned web-slinging fun. Peter Parker/ Spider-Man has been framed for stealing Dr. Otto Octavius’ (Dr. Octopus) new technology. Spidey is forced to take on his archenemies and New York City to save him name and a few people in the process.
The Neversoft Tony Hawk engine is very solid and works nicely with Spider-Man. The title takes place in sky-top locations as well as indoor environments. Everything runs at a good 30 frames per second. The art style is reminiscent of old Spidey’s comic books and gets the nostalgic feel to the player. The lines are very clean and un-jagged. Spider-Man and crew are well modeled and have just enough polygons to do the job. In typical Spider-Man fashion players get to swing from building to building and stick to any surface. It’s a lot of fun defying gravity in any area and just plain makes you feel like Spider-Man. Control is tight and players should have no problem getting into the swing of things. Players can do a web-attack on enemies with the Y button. The web will stun enemies for a second and gives you time to run and smack them down. Spidey can use his web material in different ways. In one instance he can wrap webbing around his hands to pack a bigger punch, or he can use it to pull enemies left or right. Of course, Spider-Man can just beat down enemies with a standard punch or kick. Each mission is different from the next, but there are a couple that get a bit too repetitive. Spider-Man has to chase or run from danger a lot and it’ll wear down the fun after the first few times. In one mission Spidey has to keep hostages alive and it’s a little difficult and frustrating to be placed so early in the game. The camera does its job most of the time but can be a mess. Spider-Man can be blocked completely and the camera won’t follow in some areas. When you crawl from wall to ceiling it can swing around way too much. It makes you wonder if you should take you chances on foot. What brings the Spider-Man world to life is the incredible voice acting. All characters sound very professional and true to character. Music hangs around the classic Spider-Man theme and does the job in each mission. Sound is pretty standard with a good smack for each punch and kick Spider-Man makes. Spidey fans will get a fun ride in Spider-Man. There are few titles that make players feel like they can do anything. Just remember to watch you’re step when web-slinging from building to building.
