Information Updated: 6/5/2006

In Rocksteady Studios’ new first-person shooter Urban Chaos: Riot Response, gamers are thrust into the suit of T-Zero vet Nick Mason. Armed with a wide arsenal of weapons, a trusty shield, and a commanding presence that inspires fellow rescue workers, the game puts Nick in the unenviable job of saving a city in the throes of a full-scale riot.

In the four-level preview build of Urban Chaos: Riot Response, the game established one thing solidly: the gameplay may be this-gen, but the presentation is decidedly old-school. Forgoing stylistic trends, Rocksteady went with all the classic trappings of mid-90’s games. Brutal, dirty fighting, realistic environments that aren’t sterile, and even live-action FMV news reports pepper Urban Chaos with a decidedly retro feel.

Gameplay is another tale altogether. Nick Mason is equipped with all the newest combat gadgetry, including the aforementioned shield. Mason’s riot shield soon becomes your greatest ally in the game, providing instant and total cover from frontal attacks. Bullets, rockets, flame, nothing can penetrate it—which is important, as the gangs who have taken over the city are a violent bunch that attack from strategically difficult points. With the shield, Urban Chaos becomes a more deliberately paced game than most of the genre.

Also notable in the four levels of the preview build are the variety of areas within the city. Urban Chaos may be entirely within a city, but the journey to maintaining the peace will take you from city streets to loading docks to burning buildings—most of the time assisting and commanding other rescue workers to get through the war on crime alive.

Although its too early to make a full review, Urban Chaos: Riot Response feels extremely solid, integrating new ideas into an already flooded genre. Add that in with old-school presentation that goes entirely over the top, and an online multiplayer mode (which will be covered soon), the game has a load of potential that should make the final retail game a blast to play.

Urban Chaos: Riot Response gives gamers the opportunity to step into the shoes of a real hero. Play as Nick Mason a member of T-Zero, an elite counter-gang unit, putting his life on the line in response to a terrorist threat. Specially trained in all areas of urban combat and armed with the very latest high-tech weaponry, T-Zero - the last line in urban defense, teams-up with Emergency Services groups including firefighters, paramedics and police to combat multiple threats on the city such as bombings and hostage scenarios. Gamers can explore realistic and dynamic city environments where all the intense action takes place.

Sefton Hill, Director of Rocksteady Studios said, "Urban Chaos has been designed to offer something fresh and new for gamers who are looking for a new challenge in the FPS genre. We put the player right in the middle of a full scale riot and it's no easy ride, this will be an original and intense challenge for gamers."

Urban Chaos: Riot Response features dynamic physics and highly interactive environments enveloping players in the intense, thrills-a-minute action. Fight alongside members of the Police Department, Fire Dept, and Emergency Medical Services and save the city's citizens using unique weaponry and defensive mechanisms such as the riot shield.
