Screens & Info Updated: 8/12/2003

The secrets behind this year's most eagerly awaited Australian videogame - and the name of the new game - are at last being revealed with New Zealand's Stacey Jones being given a starring role. "Rugby League" has been in the making for over 12 months and has seen the NRL and program developers Sidhe Interactive inundated with requests and suggestions from fans, right down to the best name for the game.

New Zealand distributors of the title, GameWizz Interactive, have also secured the endorsement of Kiwi league superstar, Stacey Jones. While the game will be known in other territories as "Rugby League", in New Zealand the title will be distributed as "Stacey Jones Rugby League". Mr Jones has commented, "I'm extremely excited to be a part of this project. Its great to see a videogame which captures the true feel of rugby league and allows fans to get involved at a whole new level."

Check out the 8 new screens which show off the latest gameplay build, along with a shot of the Create A Player option, which will allow for tweaking and creation right down to the smallest detail.

While we were able to provide you with screens last week (see: News), we have now a full-blow preview for you to look at. Now, I played rugby for three years back in high school - Mountain Secondary Eagles REPRESENT - and found it much more enjoyable than the traditional sports like basketball and baseball. All the hitting of football and hockey, without the padding. While it took me a few games to figure out the idiosyncracies involved - throwing the ball backwards instead of forwards, the role of the scrum and why a scrawny winger puke like me should not be anywhere near that pile of humanity, sweat and eyegouging - I wouldn't trade those experiences for the world. Rugby forged some great friendships for me that continue to this day.

Now, Sidhe Interactive is providing console and PC owners with the opportunity to recreate their favourite moments from the pitch in their homes with Rugby League 2004, due out in October of 2003. As it stands, there is no announced publisher for North America, which is a shame, but our PAL-playing compatriots will be able to score a try and play the role of hooker and scrum half. Here are a few details:

  • 2003 player and team rosters
  • State of Origin tests have been confirmed for inclusion in the game, Internationals & Super League are still being negotiated
  • Home and away jerseys, with appropriate numbers and sponsors
  • Add and edit your own custom players and teams, with height, weight, skin colour, headgear, hairstyle and hair colour all adjustable
  • Multiple camera angles, replays and cut scenes
  • Full weather conditions, including rain, day and night games
  • Injuries are included, some of which will keep players out for several games
  • 15 Australian and New Zealand-based stadiums are planned for inclusion in the game
  • Referees, live commentary and friendly matches also will be included
