Eidos Interactive's extreme take on the wrestling genre didn't fare too well with the critics, but that isn't stopping developer Paradox from upping the ante and returning with a revamped sequel, Backyard Wrestling 2: There Goes the Neighborhood. The most significant addition being touted for the follow-up is the inclusion of online play via Microsoft's Xbox Live service, powered from the ground up by Quazal's Net-Z engine. Using the USB headset, gamers can trash talk while pummeling each other with flaming pieces of wood and folding chairs. Competitive gamers can even work their way up a complete online ladder bracketing system. No specific online modes have been announced. Besides online compatibility, there are several new additions in Backyard Wrestling 2: There Goes the Neighborhood. On the visual side, there is an improved graphics engine allowing for higher polygon characters with more detailed textures and a revamped wrestling and animation system. Paradox has also implemented a new Enviro-Mental engine that allows an unprecedented number of environmental interactions by the player, standing and ground based submissions, multi-position grappling, a block button body and deeper location-specific damage system. Many of the gameplay modes from the original have been beefed up. Gamers fighting solo can compete in the "Quest for the Belt" or standard death matches, multi-player options have been expanded and the limited Create-a-Player system now includes more versatility, allowing customization of tattoos, face paint, clothing and more. “The inclusion of online play will finally allow gamers to deliver pain to opponents from around the world. With its completely re-designed and expanded create-a-wrestler system, an impressive new grappling system, more diverse move-set, solid hardcore soundtrack, and online play, BYW2 offers the complete wrestling package this fall," said Kevin Gill, Brand Manager at Eidos. Backyard Wrestling: There Goes the Neighborhood has only been announced for the Xbox at this time. Announcements concerning other versions are expected in the future.
