Screens Updated: 7/14/2005 Another handful of screens released during the ComicCon. Screens Updated: 6/27/2005 Activision just sent over 6 new screens of their stylish new Spider-Man title. Screens Updated: 6/17/2005 Three new screens of the surprisingly cool looking Nintendo DS version of the game. Activision and Treyarch are taking a new spin, pun intended, on the Spider-Man franchise by straying away from the movies and now trying to capture the look and feel of the comic books. This time they've decided to go after one of the newer franchises: Ultimate Spider-Man. This series is a retelling of the story about Peter Parker and his amazing abilities set on a modern day world. This means you'll see how Peter becomes Spider-Man and how he learns how to deal with his new responsibilities even though he still is in high school. To capture the look of a comic book, Treyarch has developed a new engine that incorporates what they call 3D art inking. What this does is at any given time, no matter what the camera angle, the shadowing on the characters are dynamically changed yet look like the highly detailed shadowing commonly found in comic books. Whether or not you consider this a buzz word, the effect comes off extremely well and looks great both in stills and while moving. However, what really pushes the feel of the comic book is Treyarch's incorporation of comic book style panels that pop onto the screen. This happens both during the game and for all the cinemas. During the game you could be moving and then a panel will pop up showing someone in danger. Or sometimes the screen will split with its own panel of whats taking place. Right down to the style of text that gets placed on the screen, you can tell they have captured the atmosphere perfectly. New to the game is the threat meter which is placed above people in distress. This will tell you how immediate the danger is to the person that needs help. Based on this you will be able to tell who has a higher priority in need of help. Based on this new meter, you can expect there will be scenarios where you will be surrounded with people who need help and you will need to act quickly to save them all. Combat has been rebuilt from the ground up to reflect more of the lack of experience and maturity of Peter Parker. He's not as strong but pretty quick so you'll find yourself doing a lot more hit and move attacks rather than direct assault. The biggest change to the game comes in the form of a new playable character. At certain points in the game, you will be given control of one of the most famous Spider-Man villians ever created, Venom so that you can play his point of view from the storyline. This doesn't mean you will only get to use him in a linear mission as you will have the ability to roam freely through the city to cause whatever havoc you may want. Causing damage and eating people will be the focus of Venom. Ultimate Spider-Man takes place in what they like to call Marvel New York where it feels like New York but takes some of its own liberties. This is not the same New York from Spider-Man 2 either. While you will see some of the same famous landmarks, it will be an all new layout. In addition, there is another city which you get to play in and that's in Peter's home of Brooklyn. We've been very impressed with how Treyarch has handled the visuals from transition of a more realistic style of graphics to the art style of a graphic novel. We're in high hopes that the gameplay will live up to the great visuals and that many of the issues people had with Spider-Man 2 have been rectified. Ultimate Spider-Man is due out later this fall on Xbox, PlayStation 2, GameCube, PC, and Nintendo DS.
