Let’s face it; Star Trek fans haven’t had much luck in the video game market, when it comes to getting a good title. Sure the Elite Force series was good, and a few others were fair, but for the most part, Trekkies have seen more misses than hits. Most of this could be due part to that most Trek games don’t have the characters from the popular shows. You mostly play the guy in the red shirt if you know what I mean. TDK and Starsphere Interactive hope to change all that with their upcoming release Shatter Universe. From this early build, it seems everything is coming together nicely. You are at the helm of the US Excelsior as Zulu, and your attempting to rescue Commander Checkov for the Janis Vortex. When you arrive, it’s too late and it seems that Checkov is now an evil tyrant bent on destruction. The warp must have triggered something, like the Mirror Mirror episode of old. Throughout the game the story changes and unfolds like a season of the show. You meet up with the bevy of Klingons, Romulans along the way, lets just hope those Tribbles stay out of sight.
Each mission starts of with the classic prologue before game play. Once there you are treated with some great visuals, and hot dog fighting action. This game is a simulation shooter through and through, so fans that wanted a more RPG style game, or another FPS…this isn’t your game. Playing much like the Wing Commander series of old, the controls are very solid, and the HUD lets you know where your enemies and comrades are around you. You have a good assortment of weapons to help destroy those pesky deflector shields. The A.I. starts off like a kitten, yet roars like a tiger in later levels. It’s almost like the developers intend to let you get your feet wet before they turn on the fire hose. In short, the game gets pretty hard as the game progresses. The game has a very nice orchestrated score to get the old adrenaline pumping too. Did I forget to mention that the actual actors George Takei and Walter Koenig do the game’s cut scenes and voiceovers? All in all if you like Star Trek, and are hoping for the next great game…this very well could be it. The game is set to ship in November on the PS2 and Xbox, so get your phasers set to FUN this winter.
